Devising Theatre is a process where performers and facilitators generate original scenes, monologues, and/or theatrical moments through a series of collaborative  drama exercises. Performances can explore personal stories, works of art, or specific social issues, themes, and topics. Though this process can be daunting, it provides young artists with the tools to experiment in a unified group context and tell their stories in their own words. These three recent pieces illustrate the actor-centered devising model that I developed over the past ten years. After we begin to build the ensemble, we brainstorm and vote on a topic. I then facilitate Story Circles, Image Theatre, Physical Theatre, and Improvisation exercises to explore topic related-themes, develop  moments, and build narratives. For these three particular projects, the devisers and I worked with their English teacher who partnered with me to facilitate discussions about dramatic structure, and worked with the ensemble to produce original writing.
